After The Pet Food Recalls, What Can You Feed Your Pets To Keep Them Healthy?

My pet food was on the list of pet food recalls last year and now I feel I have to question EVERY product I want to buy for my pets!

Do you ever feel as though your entire grocery list for your pets is off limits? A lot of us who had never worried about safe, clean food got a VERY rude awakening the past several months. Even when we were used to reading labels to make sure we were buying healthy food and treats, we soon learned that was no longer an assurance of safety.

So, what can you do about it?

I've received many e-mails and phone calls asking for simple lists and recipes to make for your pet. While this was a pretty normal reaction to the storm of recalls, few pet owners realized the sacrifice and time that would be required to return to making your own pet food.

Obviously, the decision to make your own pet food depends on the type of pet you own. For example, it's much easier to cook up or mix up food for a cat than for a large St. Bernard. If you are determined to go this route, there are some ingredients that you SHOULD NOT include in a diet for your cat or dog. This list comes from the ASPCA and is based on illnesses and deaths in pets, not on hearsay.

Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets

- Alcoholic beverages

- Avocado

- Chocolate (all forms)

- Coffee (all forms)

- Fatty foods

- Macadamia nuts

- Moldy or spoiled foods

- Onions, onion powder - all forms

- Raisins and grapes

- Salt

- Yeast dough

- Garlic - all forms

- Products sweetened with xylitol - artificial sweetener

Now, if you're concerned about the pet food recalls and want to try a homemade cat chow and dog chow recipe to keep your pets healthy, here's one to get you started.

This simple, healthful chow mixture is easy to make for your dogs or cats. I like this recipe because it includes meat, vegetables and rice. I prefer recipes that do not include large quantities of wheat or white flour as main ingredients because many pets can become sensitized to those ingredients.

Meat, Vegie and Rice Stew

INGREDIENTS

3 pounds minced chicken meat or ground hamburger

2 1/2 cups frozen vegetable blend (no garlic or onions), minced

4 cups rice 6 1/2 cups water

1/2 cup olive oil

DIRECTIONS

Place chicken, vegetables, and rice into a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Stir in water until the mixture is smooth. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.

Everyday Common Sense Precautions

Now that we've dealt with the issue of feeding your pets healthy, safe food, the next most important thing for you to remember is to have a qualified veterinarian examine your pet if anything unusual occurs - whether it's from food or from other products they're exposed to during an average day. Unusual symptoms might include vomiting, lethargy, listlessness, incontinence, loose bowel, or general loss of appetite.

I like to remind pet owners that their companion animals can be affected by products they are using in their homes or cars where the animals live and ride. For example, most people don't realize that air fresheners with synthetic chemicals and fragrances settle to the floor where pets walk in the residue, clean their paws and ingest the toxins.

As a result of the indoor pollution many pets are exposed to, we are seeing an increase in the number of chronic illnesses in our pets just as we see the increase in the general human population.

Learn about toxins that can affect your pet's health, not just about the food they eat. Your pet is counting on you - be their advocate! Look for natural, organic products that are certified by an organization you trust.

Feeding Pets After the Recession

The estimates show that there are more than 74 million dogs in United States of America. Plenty of the pets are with their home owners but many of them are in the homeless shelters. The number has greatly suffered after the recession period of 2008 because many pet owners had left their pets in the home shelters as they didn't find it feasible to feed their pets and feed their family in a proper manner. The rescue to feed their family in a proper manner only came when they submitted their pets to the shelters or to the compounds in their nearby locality. The aftereffects of those decisions had increased the homeless pet's number to an alarming situation.

So the recession have made plenty of people short of cash and plenty of people were out of their basic needs due to the jobs cut and other related affects. We also know that the people's minds were overwhelmed because the banks were putting claims on their mortgages and they were unable to find a suitable work to make their both ends meet. If you are a victim of recession then there are some guidelines that you could follow in order to feed both your family as well as your pets in a proper manner.

For sustaining after the recession you must make your choices clear as what your basic needs are and what are your luxuries. You must cut down you luxury items and stick to your basic needs so that you, your family and your pets are able to survive in that depression. For that you could give up your cable TV, you could also cut down your newspaper expenditures and you could also drop your expenditures on weekend picnic trips etc. then you could also cut down your mortgage payments and use your money only for your family needs and basic essential requirements.

How to Look After Your Pet's Health

Owning a pet is a huge responsibility, you need to make sure you care for your pets health by giving them the correct food, enough water, the right housing and enough exercise.

With so many cases of pets being miss-treated and incorrectly cared for I thought id share some of my tips, ideas and finding to help you maintain your pets health to the highest standard.

The most common family pet is the dog, often considered a family member and should be cared for in the same way. Depending on the size and breed of your dog different amounts of time should be allocated each day for walks, generally the larger the breed the longer you will need to spend walking.

There is not an exact amount of time you should walk your dog, timescales should be based on the following aspects

The shorter your dogs legs the less distance he can go
Hot weather will make your dog more prone to overheating so in the summer months it is wise to take shorter walks and remember to take a sufficient amount of water for your dog to drink.
Generally dogs can walk further when walking on dirt trails or softer ground, rough concrete can be hard on the pads of their feet.
Take into account your dogs age and health, if your dog is not used to being walked remember to break him in gently starting with short walks and gradually build up to longer ones.
If your dog has health problems such as arthritis or heart disease it is best to seek advice from your veterinarian to discuss how far your dog should be walked.

Understanding what your dog is comfortable with when waling will keep your pets health in optimum condition. When it comes to your pets health one of the main things you are in control of is what they eat. Generally when purchasing pet food the higher the cost the better the quality. Always do your research to make sure you are feeding your pet exactly what they need, providing them with a well balanced diet that contains the vitamins and nutrients they need will keep your pet healthy and will lead to a longer happier life. As humans we are responsible for our pets health and how we care for and feed them, remember that younger animals such as kittens or puppies will need a balanced formula food that is different for normal dog food, if given the wrong food it can lead to growth that is to fast which can then lead to bone, joint and many other problems. Food You Should NEVER Feed A Dog

Believe it or not one of the worst things you can give your dog is chocolate! Even in small amounts it can be fatal for smaller dogs and can cause serious problems with your pets health. This is due to Theo bromine which can increase the heart rate and blood pressure of your dog.
Onions, feeding a dog onions can be fatal, onions contain a substance which alters and can destroy red blood cells in dogs this can lead to haemolytic anaemia and sometimes even death

Pet owners love their pets and although you may feel like you are giving them the correct care you could be harming them without even knowing it. Every pet owner should take the time to research and understand all about their pets heath so you can enjoy a long and happy life together.
