Caring For Your Aging Pet

Pets age just like people do, and there are a few things you can do to make sure your pet is as happy and healthy as possible in their sunset years. Aside from regular veterinarian care, your dog needs a few things to make this possible.

Pets need to maintain a healthy body weight just like people do. Overweight dogs are at risk for all kinds of problems, ranging from arthritis and sore joints to heart disease and liver problems.

Keeping the pet's weight where it should be requires keeping treats to a minimum. Having too many treats will put weight on your pet very rapidly. Occasional treats are fine, but too many can lead to health problems.

Feeding your pet should be limited to one large meal a day. You can also feed it a few small portions throughout the day as well. Just remember not to feed it in between meals, and don't let anyone else either. Keeping feeding in control will control weight gain.

Always have fresh water that is cool available for your pet to drink from. Keeping a dog hydrated with clean water will help maintain good health for a long time. Make sure it is in an easy place to get to, and as they age they may start to struggle with reaching the bowl.

Walking your pet every day will help keep support good blood circulation, and the activity will excite the dog's senses and mind. Keeping them active while minimizing boredom will prevent your pet from being depressed. They will also have a better chance of health and happiness if they have you as a good companion.

Feeding dry food to your pet as they age may cause them digestive problems. Sooner or later they will have to start eating moist food. Chewing is also a problem for many older dogs because their teeth start to hurt and decay.

The best care you can give your aging pet is taking it to the vet on a regular basis. Regularly scheduled exams will discover illness soon and offer more treatment options. Also, maintaining their overall health will extend their happiness.

Making small adaptations to your pet's routine will help them live happier as they age. Visits to the vet will also be beneficial, and should be done on a regular basis.
