What Your Leopard Gecko Feed Must Be Composed Of

Leopard geckos are really very fascinating creatures. No wonder its popularity around the world continues to increase. Not only men have the interest of having these geckos as pets, but also women. They come in various colors and species. They are also very easy to take care of. They are known for being hardy animals because they can thrive on even the rough environment and they can live up to 20 years in captivity. If you are interested on taking care of these geckos, then you should be able to have knowledge about these reptiles first. And one of the most important things that you should know is what a leopard gecko feed must be composed of.

They are known to be carnivore; meaning they eat live feeds. Their favorite foods are insects and that is why they are also known as insectivore. For beginners, they might not have any idea on what kind or kinds of insects to give their reptile friend. For some beginners, they resort to giving their pets fruits and vegetables (which is not what their feed is composed of). Yes, fruits and vegetables are nutritious for humans, but they are not for geckos. Geckos need protein and fat more than any other nutrients. That is why they love to eat insects.

Visiting pet stores, you will find some that sells crickets, mealworms, and grasshoppers. These insects are the favorite foods of these geckos. Amongst those insects, grasshoppers are the most nutritious for geckos. Unfortunately, it costs way to expensive as compared to other insects being sold. But, if you have the cash and do not bother about the price, then giving your geckos grasshoppers would surely make them as happy and healthy as they could be. For medium hobbyists, giving their geckos crickets would already do the job. Crickets are cheaper than grasshoppers and also provide geckos with good amount of protein and fat that they need. For mealworms, they are more of fat content.

You should also "gut load" your leopard gecko feed before feeding it to your pet. Meaning, you should feed it and make sure they are healthy and nutritious. It would just be useless to give your reptile pets with leopard gecko feed that lacks the nutrients that they need. Another very important thing that you should bear in mind is to make sure that your geckos would eat the food that you gave them. Feeding them is not just like picking up a few insects, putting them in the vivarium, and leaving your pets to eat them. There are some instances where the geckos are the ones being bitten or eaten by the insects. Of course, this may cause your reptile friend some injuries. So, see to it that your pet eats every insect you put on the vivarium.

You may also prefer to give them supplements such as calcium. There are calcium supplements that are being sold in pet stores. These calcium supplements are used by putting some amount of it in a plastic bag along with the insects and giving it a good shake and then giving the leopard gecko feed to your reptile pet. Also, you should provide your pet with clean water. Providing all these leopard gecko feed to your pet can ensure them of being healthy and happy in all the years to come.
