When animals enter the rescue system they are slow to trusting people. Some will recover faster than others, some may never fully trust anyone for a long time. Patience, attention and kindness are the most effective remedies. and absolutely the most important. Feed them at the same time every day, and if you have other pets feed them in a separate area until the rescue feels comfortable around them.
Dogs may become frightened by a raised voice or sudden movements. Talk to it soothingly if this happens, but don't give it excessive attention, as this may re-enforce its fear. Act calmly and continue doing what you were doing. It looks up to you as the pack leader and over time it will follow your lead.
Socializing will take some effort. When he has developed trust in you, take him for short walks and introduce him to other dogs and people gradually. The results are worth the effort.
Cats will hide, and sometimes do their best to escape. Allow them to decide when they are ready to approach.Keep the litter box clean. Feed them twice a day. When they finally come into your presence, don't assume they are ready to be petted or approached. Once they decide you are worthy of their attention, they will sit at your feet or rub your legs. When they climb into your lap they own you. Accept it and be grateful you have been approved for keeping the cat company.
I know next to nothing about ferrets, rabbits or snakes; I do know that one may eat the other two, if there is an opportunity and it's large enough.
