A few months ago, I was over at a friend's house, staying with them for a few days, and I was busy on my computer, and they were running around the house playing on their smart phone. Their dog was following them around, and obviously needed some attention, and/or perhaps wanted something. I thought it was a rather funny scene, but it makes sense that the dog is feeling neglected, ever since my friend got their iPhone. Now they are too busy playing on this high-tech gadget, and they have been ignoring their pet.
After watching this off and on for about an hour and a half, the dog started barking at my friend. And my friend said; "what, what, what do you want - oh my gosh, I forgot to feed you." Of course, I would've reminded my friend, but I had no idea what time they normally fed their dog. Now then, I'd like to ask you a serious question; are you missing your pets feeding time because you are too busy playing on your iPhone too? Okay so, let's talk about this for a second.
There was an interesting article in the San Jose Mercury News the other day titled; "Next up: iPhones Anonymous? Psychologists fret about smartphone obsession," by Ellen Gibson, a reprint from the Associated press published on July 26, 2011. The article stated:
"Merlo, a clinical psychologist, said she's observed a number of behaviors among smartphone users that she labels "problematic." Among them, Merlo says some patients pretend to talk on the phone or fiddle with apps to avoid eye contact at a bar or a party. Others are so genuinely engrossed in their phones that they ignore the people around them completely. "The more bells and whistles the phone has," she says, "the more likely they are to get too attached."
Not only are people getting addicted to their smart phones, and there are even now self-help groups for people who can't seem to turn them off, or go without playing on them for more than 10 minutes at a time. Have you ever noticed when you're sitting down in a restaurant, or in a coffee shop, that all of a sudden someone comes in sits down, and they are busy playing on their personal tech device the entire time, completely ignoring everyone else in the room?
It happens more often than you think, and you may be doing it without thinking about it. Now then, that's all fine and good, and it's your choice to spend your time how you wish, but please don't neglect your animals. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
